Glendalough ICF/MR has a dog. In December 1999 they had a new resident who was having a very difficult time adjusting to his new home. He had always had a dog in his life and his family expressed that a dog would probably help him feel more at home. Staff noticed that there was a pet policy in the facility handbook. So they decided to try to put that policy to use! It has been a huge success.

A staff member brought Smoky into the facility. Smoky is a purebred miniature poodle. He has made all the difference in the world to the person who was having trouble adjusting. Glendalough now feels like home- both for the resident and Smoky! The process was relatively simple. Staff had to get approval from management. There were basic requirements that the dog not be a puppy, that it be well house broken, have current immunizations and be in good health. They also had to get approval from the families/guardians of all the residents and the social workers involved with the residents.
