After observing staff having a staff meeting, a consumer asked the simple question, "Why can't we have our own meeting with donuts?" The Consumer Discussion Group was initiated from this conversation. The consumers plan the agenda, with some input from staff. This is a wonderful way to empower the consumers and let them know how important they really are to their providers.

All of the consumers benefit from this group because it enables the consumers to voice their opinions on a variety of subjects. Examples of topics discussed are: weather and why we have to wear coats, hats, mittens, etc.; listening - not butting in or making noises; social skills; how to treat staff and peers with respect; problems with peers; role modeling; and individual needs. This idea could be replicated in both home and work environments.
