The staff is aware that we have a person whose primary language is Vietnamese and English is their secondary language. They know that the language barrier may make transitions and job opportunities more difficult and that there is not always an interpreter readily available. Because of this, the staff has gone “above and beyond” by developing a communication program that enables this person to express his thoughts and in return helps him to be more successful and improves his positive self image and self esteem. They have set up a positive procedure for communication by developing a program that uses word phrases in English, the pronunciation of that word in Vietnamese, and the spelling of that word in Vietnamese (See Example Below). The ingenuity of staff developing this program could serve as a model to other agencies that serve clients from different cultures. It also enhances staff taking ownership in learning and assisting a particular client from a different culture.
